I think we have all heard about the African athlete who has had to undergo a battery of tests in order to determine her sex. Well, turns out she is intersexed. On the outside, she looks female. Instead of ovaries, she has testes (which are in the same spot ovaries would be on a "typical" female).

So, should she be allowed to continue to compete with women? Or should she compete with men?

This is definitely a really tough subject. I personally feel pretty strongly about the situation, but I'm just not sure which way to lean as mixed up at that sounds. I'm an out lesbian who is very accepting of all aspects of the gay society, but I am also an aspiring Olympian. I'm not sure I'd be so glad to see her competing against me in a sport, because one cannot help but see that in some aspects she has an unfair athletic advantage. I've had this discussion with many individuals and still have yet to take a real position. I hope others comment, it's an intriguing subject.

Well first we have ask ourselves: why are sports gendered? And once that question is answered, the right decision can be made. If the answer is because men are stronger, then her strength should be the basis for the decision.

Heteronormativity is a strange, but powerful thing. When a little girl and little boy play together, adults will project these odd notions onto them, making jokes about a future romance between the children. However, when two girls play together, it isn’t likely the same remarks will be made about their relationship. In Susan Shaw and Janet Lee's chapter on Sex and Intimacy, they detail that sexual scripts “provide frameworks and guidelines for sexual feelings and behaviors in a particular community at a particular time” and marks a crucial note that “foundational in these scripts is the oppositional binary of heterosexuality and homosexuality that constructs normative sexuality and shapes sexual feelings and expression” (281).
