Am I really blogging about Miley Cyrus?

Girls studies, based on my current knowledge, is obviously the study of girls, the history of women, the rights of women, etc. In my opinion, society views “queer” girls as girls that are challenging society. Popular culture impacts the identity of queer girls, by either glamorizing it or demoralizing it. There are amazing shows like Showtime’s “The L Word” that glamorize queer girls by displaying the lives of successful gay women. On the other hand, MTV creates shows like “A Shot At Love with Tila Tequila” that make being gay or bisexual a joke. Yes, it is always nice to see Tila Tequila in a teeny, tiny bikini jumping around, but come on! How many episodes of that show did people actually watch??? I know from watching ‘The L Word” even though I am in a heterosexual relationship right now, it made me very curious about the lesbian community. The love; the drama; the beauty; it was all so exciting. Queer girls can challenge popular representations of women, because they make it okay to be yourself. I honestly think most girls have fantasies or curiosities about other women. How can you not look at some women, and just think, “Wow, they are beautiful.” Credit should be given where it is deserved, even if you are not thinking sexually. Women are truly beautiful creatures. Queer girls make being different okay and they make being different beautiful. Do you think most girls have had their curiosities about being with someone of the same sex? I say yes.

But you do not have to be a “queer” to challenge society. Using an artist from the entertainment industry as an example, Madonna challenged society. She did not care what others thought of her. She explored her sexuality and her beliefs, and broke a lot of traditional barriers. Remember when Madonna performed at the MTV awards, and made out with Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears? Or when she portrayed Jesus as a black man in her “Like a Prayer” video. Madonna is truly an eccentric person. I don’t think we’ll ever have another artist like her. I’m sorry, but there is something wrong when VH1 comes out with a “Divas Special” and Miley Cyrus is one of artists performing on the show. Um…no Miley Cyrus is not a diva. I’d rather see Taylor Swift singing and complaining about her messed up relationships, then Miley Cyrus sing as a “diva”. Why did Britney Spears have to go wacko. Now we’re stuck with listening and hearing bout Miley Cyrus 24-7. Well I guess you only hear about it if you are always on perezhilton.com 24-7 like I am at those times when I am bored and driving myself crazy! How did I even start talking about Miley Cyrus?

The prevalence of popular culture in our media-driven world provokes a need for Girls Studies, because I think we’re at a time in society, where the people have forgotten their morals. The wrong things are glamorized. It really did become okay for a while when Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, and Lindsay Lohan were on top, that being a drunk, slut was okay. That may be candid, but these girls were glamorized for doing “ALL” the wrong things, and it had a huge impact on our young girls, including myself. Drugs such as cocaine and xanax, became the norm for many girls to do. For awhile, many of us got fooled and decepted by the media. Behaving in such a way, is not okay, and it should not have been okay. I think what’s sad is that at the age of 21, there are so many younger girls who are going to have a harder time getting over such moral less behavior, if they don’t stop now. We need Girls Studies’ because girls should be educated about what is really okay, and what other girls are going through, so we don’t resort to reckless behavior to make us feel better about situations in our lives.
