Girls Studies Definition and Readings

Girls Studies. Of course, it seems as if this definition may have endless meanings, as there are many aspects to it. I think it focuses on the basis of girls' decisions in their "girlhood," why they make those decisions, how society affects girls, and of course the list can go on. Girls Studies focuses on a whole new aspect of women's studies. It specifies a very confusing time in a woman's life- her "girlhood."

I have always taken a "different" stance in popular culture as relating to girls. I'm not sure if it's scientifically proven or not, but it is a widely known idea that "girlhood" is a very influential time in a girl's life- referring to the media and environment impacting girls more than any other time in womanhood. I truly think that yes, it's easy to be influenced and highly affected by what is seen in the media, but every girl can make her own decision. She can choose to stay as true to herself as possible. On the other hand, being a girl is a time where a girl may or may not be figuring out that very identity, and the media portrays ideas of the "right" identity of a girl. Of course, we all know there is no right or wrong identity that a girl should have.

We are like sponges growing up! Everything we hear, see, experience, or are exposed to affects us tremendously on so many levels. This is the reason for this class and why it is such an integral aspect of feminist research.
