Shocking Times on the Real Housewives of Orange County

While surfing the web I overheard the Real Housewives of Orange County on my t.v. The housewife Alexis Bellino made the comment“The problem with liberal America today is that this is the decade of of being so liberal and women being able to run for President and being able to do everything that a man can do and excuse me but I’m a woman and I’m made from my husband’s rib. I want to be the wife and to be his baby and his cherished, what he cherishes.” I was so shocked when I heard this. Women should have the choice of being a housewife or whatever they want to be. Comments like this are ones that lower female status in society and allow us to been seen as the lesser sex.What do you think about these type of portrayals of women in reality TV?

  Maiden   Soft, sweet , and silent.   She is youthful , desired by all.    She wears long, beautiful gowns. Awaiting the hand of someone who’s strong and tall.   “A lady only speaks when spoken to.”   Words that have worn her ears before she could lace her own shoes.    “ Don’t eat so much, a lady must always watch her figure.”      The maiden’s first trigger.    You see, she’s been trained and groomed to fit the needs of men.   Before she could even reach the age of ten.    Men are blessed with strength and glor y when they'r e born.    Women? We’re cursed with beauty and immediate scorn.   You want us to fit perfectly into your ideals.    But we’d rather swim with eels.    There is more to her than what you can see.   Have you even asked about her hobbies?   Yes, she can cook and clean,    but she can also create literary scenes .    She aims to soar beyond the trees.   We crave to do what we please,   Without begging for permission from a man on our knees.

Heteronormativity is a strange, but powerful thing. When a little girl and little boy play together, adults will project these odd notions onto them, making jokes about a future romance between the children. However, when two girls play together, it isn’t likely the same remarks will be made about their relationship. In Susan Shaw and Janet Lee's chapter on Sex and Intimacy, they detail that sexual scripts “provide frameworks and guidelines for sexual feelings and behaviors in a particular community at a particular time” and marks a crucial note that “foundational in these scripts is the oppositional binary of heterosexuality and homosexuality that constructs normative sexuality and shapes sexual feelings and expression” (281).
