SL Mid-semester update

I’ve been working with Girl Scouts Troop 7079 based out of Metro Place apartments. Working with the girls has been very educational and rewarding. Metro Place is located off of Kirkman Rd. in Orlando Florida. Most of the girls that attend this group are in a low socio-economic status. The girl’s ages range from 9-15 years old. They are very interested in activities and lessons prepared by the group leaders. They are intelligent girls that like to be involved with the program. I like working with them because they seem eager to be a part of something fun that brings learning into the environment. Sometimes it’s hard to get the girls on track because they like to talk or run around a little but we never have major problems with the girls. The group leaders are very supportive and they like to reach out to talk to the girls as much as they can. It’s important for them to have someone they can speak to and trust on a weekly basis. I’m very glad that I chose this particular group of girls because they are in need; because of where they live and their educational struggles. I like helping them, talking to them, and listening to their goals. I’m excited for the next couple of weeks where we will be going on some more trips and discovering more about these wonderful children.

  Maiden   Soft, sweet , and silent.   She is youthful , desired by all.    She wears long, beautiful gowns. Awaiting the hand of someone who’s strong and tall.   “A lady only speaks when spoken to.”   Words that have worn her ears before she could lace her own shoes.    “ Don’t eat so much, a lady must always watch her figure.”      The maiden’s first trigger.    You see, she’s been trained and groomed to fit the needs of men.   Before she could even reach the age of ten.    Men are blessed with strength and glor y when they'r e born.    Women? We’re cursed with beauty and immediate scorn.   You want us to fit perfectly into your ideals.    But we’d rather swim with eels.    There is more to her than what you can see.   Have you even asked about her hobbies?   Yes, she can cook and clean,    but she can also create literary scenes .    She aims to soar beyond the trees.   We crave to do what we please,   Without begging for permission from a man on our knees.

The G[r]ay Area Between Female Friendship & Sexuality

Heteronormativity is a strange, but powerful thing. When a little girl and little boy play together, adults will project these odd notions onto them, making jokes about a future romance between the children. However, when two girls play together, it isn’t likely the same remarks will be made about their relationship. In Susan Shaw and Janet Lee's chapter on Sex and Intimacy, they detail that sexual scripts “provide frameworks and guidelines for sexual feelings and behaviors in a particular community at a particular time” and marks a crucial note that “foundational in these scripts is the oppositional binary of heterosexuality and homosexuality that constructs normative sexuality and shapes sexual feelings and expression” (281).
