Sharsheret- Linking women together
For the first portion of my activist project I helped coordinate and attended a fundraiser for Sharsheret. Sharsheret is a national organization for women who have breast cancer. What this organization does is connect survivors of breast cancer with women who are currently fighting the battle of breast cancer. Sharsheret means “link” in Hebrew, and that is exactly what the organization does; link these women together. The survivor takes her link to treatment, helps her cook when it deems necessary, guides her through the process, helps her run errands and gives her tips on what to do while she is a patient. The concept of Sharsheret is truly beautiful and is the epitome of selfless acts from one woman to another.
My sorority has two philanthropies each year and hosting a block party for the Sharsheret foundation is one of them. We called the event “After Dark on Greek Park.” We partnered with a fraternity to use their house, yard and patio for the block party. It took place on October 22, 2009 from 7:00-11:00 pm. The wristbands were $5 per person and all of the profit was donated for breast cancer. The food and entertainment was donated so the profit was great. There were bounce houses and other inflatables, caricatures, a performance by a local band, a performance by the RUKUS dance team and a disc jockey. There were hundreds of people who attended After Dark on Greek Park and we ended up donating over $4,000 to Sharsheret.
I helped organize the event and make arrangements. Throughout the duration of the actual event I was a head supervisor, had to make sure that all went well and make sure the itinerary was being followed correctly. I had a lot of fun running around while mingling with people and informing them on what Sharsheret is.
From this experience I learned that a community really can come together to support a cause. UCF students benefitted because they now more educated on this amazing organization and had a great time while doing so.
Others helping others and women helping women is something very inspiring. My sorority holds Sharsheret close to our hearts because many of our relatives have been a victim of this horrible cancer. We will continue year after year to raise money to make sure that as many woman as possible have a link to guide them during their breast cancer treatment.
