A Day at the Range

I am posting this under discussions and blogs.  My daughter just turned twenty-one and I am going to pay for her a class for a Concealed Weapons Permit for Christmas.  Since I am doing this, we decided to go to the shooting range today so she could practice.  She invited one of her close friends to come along.  While we were there, we noticed a good number of teenage girls there.  It appears that a lot of fathers and/or grandfathers are taking their daughters and/or granddaughters to the shooting range.  The days of gender stereotyping for this sport appear to be over.  All the girls seemed to be enjoying themselves while learning an aspect of self-defense.  There was more teenager girls there than teenage boys. 
I know there are some out there that might have different opinions about gun control or the Second Amendment rights.  This post is not intended for an argument on these subjects.  I am just making observations about father/grandfathers and daughters/granddaughters spending time together and girls engaged in traditional male activities.

  Maiden   Soft, sweet , and silent.   She is youthful , desired by all.    She wears long, beautiful gowns. Awaiting the hand of someone who’s strong and tall.   “A lady only speaks when spoken to.”   Words that have worn her ears before she could lace her own shoes.    “ Don’t eat so much, a lady must always watch her figure.”      The maiden’s first trigger.    You see, she’s been trained and groomed to fit the needs of men.   Before she could even reach the age of ten.    Men are blessed with strength and glor y when they'r e born.    Women? The G[r]ay Area Between Female Friendship & Sexuality

Heteronormativity is a strange, but powerful thing. When a little girl and little boy play together, adults will project these odd notions onto them, making jokes about a future romance between the children. However, when two girls play together, it isn’t likely the same remarks will be made about their relationship. In Susan Shaw and Janet Lee's chapter on Sex and Intimacy, they detail that sexual scripts “provide frameworks and guidelines for sexual feelings and behaviors in a particular community at a particular time” and marks a crucial note that “foundational in these scripts is the oppositional binary of heterosexuality and homosexuality that constructs normative sexuality and shapes sexual feelings and expression” (281).
